MMPs are matrix metalloproteinase, a group of zinc dependent proteolytic enzymes which play a major role in matrix degradation, rebuilding and cell migration process MMPs have a broad category of approximately 28 classes. MMP2 and MMP9 belongs to a family of endopeptidases that cleave extracellular matrix proteins, its primary substrate is the lattice network of basement membrane that support epithelial cell and endothelium. MMPs play an important role in many physiological processes like angiogenesis, wound healing, bone remodeling, sperm viability and motility, remodeling of sperm, differentiation and modification of sperm and some pathological process like Inflammation, CTVT and Mammary tumour, mastitis and prolapse. Zymography is a simple technique that is commonly used to assess MMPs activity & efficacy of MMIs. Substrate zymography or gelatin zymography is tool for detect MMP2 and MMP9.
